Last night was a little crazy in the NHL with two of the five games not going as planned. First off, the Columbus Blue Jackets finally decided to play like an NHL team, at least for one night. Normally their two to one home win would have proved to be irrelevant to the daily fantasy community, but they took down Kari Lehtonen, who was the popular choice for goalie of the night. Dallas seemed to sleepwalk through this game and in the end they paid the price.
The other surprise was Phoenix shutting out Nashville 4-0. Phoenix started a rookie, Chad Johnson (no it’s not Ochocinco), who proceeded to stop all 21 shots he faced in his first start of the year. The big star from a DFS perspective was defenceman Keith Yandle who led the way with 1G (PPG) and 2A.
The big scoring game of the night was Boston’s 5-3 win over Carolina, as the Bruins appear to be on their way to having another great season. It won’t always be pretty but they seem to get the job done. From a DFS perspective, it means their goalies will be good plays on most nights. Once again, the Bruins were led by another defenceman as Zdeno Chara had 1G (PPG), 2A (1 Shorthanded) +1 and 4SOG. David Krejci also had 1G and 1A(PP) for the Bruins, and Carolina was led by Eric Staal who had 1G and 1A.
The first game that I’m looking at is Minnesota at home against Columbus. As you know I am not a fan of the Blue Jackets, and they are playing on the back end of a B2B. Minnesota has two good goalies, either of which would be a good play tonight. Offensively, Zach Parise is the star of the team with nine points in five games and should have another good outing tonight. Miko Koivu and Dany Heatley are also good players to target from this game.
Another game that I like is Ottawa at home against Washington. Washington is coming off their first win of the year and Ottawa is coming off an overtime loss to the Penguins. I’m expecting a big effort tonight from Ottawa and believe they will run over Washington. Craig Anderson has been outstanding in net for the Sens, while they are led by all world defenceman Erik Karlsson.
My last game to target has Dallas traveling to Detroit, after dropping their game last night to Columbus. Being a Leaf fan this is tough to say, but I expect Detroit to win this one - in DFS you can’t let your personal feelings get in the way. Pavel Datsyuk should have a big game.
My 3 picks of the night:
Goalie- Whoever gets the start for Minnesota
Defenceman- Erik Karlsson (Ottawa)
Forward- Patrick Marleau (San Jose)
