“Lefty” put his foot on the gas and never let off!
Congratulations to Phil Mickelson for his victory at the Waste Management Phoenix Open (TPC Scottsdale). PGA fans were one shot away from seeing a first round 59 and two shots from seeing a record-setting 58. If only he could get one more chance at that birdie on the 18th. This was a great week for Daily Fantasy Golf. Here at Daily Fantasy Radio, along with Fantazzle, we gave away $150 worth of free money (we love giving away cash and helping you make money). Because of last week’s success, Fantazzle is treating DFR to another FreeRoll! Check out the Daily Fantasy Radio $50 Fantazzle FreeRoll now! Fantazzle has a great variety of games for any level of Fantasy Golfer. Personally, I was extremely excited to see more people discussing and playing Daily Fantasy Golf this week. This week we are faced with another Pro-Am. Sure, I would love to play in a Pro-Am, hobnob with the pros, and get to play some awesome courses; however, as a PGA fan, Pro-Ams are not my favorite tournament format. I worry that some of the big name guys don’t take these tournaments seriously during their playing time with the amateurs. This week fantasy golfers will have 54 holes before a cut and only 60 golfer will “make the cut.” The PGA does, however, consider the 61st -70th guys as making the cut, but they won’t play the last 18. Each golfer gets to play all three courses in play at the event: Pebble Beach Golf Course (Par 72); Spyglass Hill Golf Club (Par 72); and Monterey Peninsula Country Club’s Shore Course (Par 70). These courses are set up for guys with an excellent short game. The lengths don’t really cater to “bombers” (6816, 6953, 6838). Last year’s winner, ironically Phil Mickelson, is a master with the wedge and it bodes well for him on these courses. I look for guys with high GIRs to perform well this week. With that said, once again, I am extremely high on Brandt Snedeker.
Last week we finished with a 3-3 record against the cut (remember, the cut is one of the most important aspects of Daily Fantasy Golf), and if we put “Antlergate” out of the equation we are 3-2. We are at it again this week, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see similar names at the top of the leaderboard. Make sure to listen to Daily Fantasy Radio Live at 5:00 PM Eastern for tournament info and follow @Tobinator44 on the Twitterverse to make sure there are no last minute changes.
Brandt Snedeker: If you aren’t playing this guy in any fantasy format, then you aren’t winning. Brandt is the poster child for consistency. He placed 2nd last week and has been a top-10 lock since early last year. Brandt is the king of the GIR, once again a credit to his consistency. He’s on top of my rankings and my pick for highest finish in the group.
Phil Mickelson: Last week’s winner and last year’s winner at this event. Phil can play, we all know that, and he should be riding a hot hand into this tournament. The only thing I worry about with Phil is his desire to “goof around” with the amateurs during these formats. Phil has taken down this tournament four times and was T-3 last year in GIR at 75%. I look for another great performance from Phil this week.
Webb Simpson: Webb is another short game guy. He is also a guy a guy that excels in the GIR stat. He performed well at the Sony Open, finishing in 20th place and definitely showing the game to build on that. At his last outing at Pebble Beach, he posted a made cut. He has progressed a long way since then (major winner) and should see success this week.
Robert Garrigus: Garrigus has played in three tournaments this year and has made the cut in all three. He is another consistent player and has had success at this tournament in the past, making the cut five out of six times in the last six years. He finished 11th last week and is, in my mind, a definite lock for a top-20 finish.
Honorable Mention- Jim Furyk: Last year, I was afraid of Furyk. I still worry about him because of his “choke” ability, but he does have the play built for this course. Besides swinging like Charles Barkley, he’s ranked in my top-10 in this tournament. Furyk has missed the cut only once in his ten appearances at the AT&T, and with his iron play and his skills on the green, he is a guy to keep an eye on this week.
